Understanding how to reduce stress should be at the top of your list of to-dos. You might think you have it under control, but the truth is that stress has a way of creeping up on you, and will create mental and physical, health repercussions.

Stress is an overwhelming force that interrupts our body’s natural ability to fend off disease.

We live in a hectic world, often by our own choices, making our stress hormone, cortisol, work overtime. This is not the way this hormone was meant to act.

The body’s stress reaction was supposed to be called into play when one’s actual survival was threatened, not when you are 5 minutes late to work, or…  Regardless of what causes your stress, you need to find an effective, natural way, to reduce it.

Try not to rely on prescription medications, or even consider them, they may offer some short-term relief, but often they can make things get worse. And if you don’t believe me, read the prescription warning label!

Recognize When You’re Stressed
The first step is to recognize that you are stressed. It’s amazing how many people maintain high levels of stress and that becomes their modus operandi.

When they get to that point, they don’t even realize that they are experiencing stress. If you are in this situation you need to reflect back to a time when you were not constantly stressed out.

Find Your ‘Happy Place’

What it would be like if you were in your favorite place?  Is it on an island somewhere? Or perhaps you are more of the daredevil type and love jumping out of planes. Whatever it happens to be, it’s important to ‘see’ yourself being in that situation.

Find a Place That is Quiet

You need a place where you can go to, just to get away from it all. Even if that is for only five to ten minutes a day.

This could be in a remote area of a park or it could be going to a sauna in a gym or a massage. It can work wonders to reset your internal batteries and can help you continue on.

Try A Massage

Why is it that people often opt for massages when feeling stressed? Simple, because it works!  Stress is much more than just psychological, as its effects manifest throughout the body; muscular pain, tension, inability to sleep and much, much more.

A massage can help address some of the manifestations of stress, such as pain and tension. Some massage therapists are also trained in the art of acupressure, which is using focused pressure at specific acupoints in order to get “chi” flowing once more.

Connect Socially
We need contact with each other. Face-to-face contact is the best, but if that is not available connect with people on social media. Strive to stay off business and political topics when you are stressed out. These will only add to your stress.  Consider talking about music, hobbies, funny stuff, or whatever you and your friends would like to talk about.

Visit with Family or Friends:
Spend more time with people you are close to. You can plan day trips here and there, or you can just all be with each other for short periods of time each day. If schedules are scattered, try to set up, at least, one or two days a week where you have a dinner or lunch together.

Volunteer Work
Volunteering can help people see that their lives aren’t always as bad as they thought. When you actually see others and their difficulties, and then you have a way to help those people, your stress levels can be drastically reduced.

Exercise is a proven stress-reducing activity. If you are extremely stressed out, consider upping the ante and going for higher impact type of activities like Kickboxing or some kind of boot camp. Exercise can actually help prevent onsets of stress from happening in the first place and can reduce the effect when it does.

Exercise has numerous benefits on physical health, but can also help regulate emotional well-being, and reduce the negative results from a stressful lifestyle.

Exercise elevates levels of beneficial brain chemicals, known as endorphin’s, which elevate mood, promote relaxation and counter stress. Regular, daily exercise also increases testosterone levels, which shares an inverse relationship with cortisol, as one goes up, the other goes down.

For best results, exercise a minimum of three times weekly, making sure to include weight-bearing exercises.

Because stress is an energy-robbing force, maintaining a diet that can replenish our energy is an important part of combating it. Avoid foods that make you sluggish and sleepy. Eating fruits and nuts are great energy foods. Drink lots of clean water to stay hydrated as well.

Take a Vacation
Companies offer vacations to their employees for a reason. It gives the employees the ability to live life outside the company. It also helps the employees get away from the situation that may be causing stress and lets them see that there is more to life than just work.

Taking Steps To Reduce Stress

  • Write down two places that you consider your happy places.
  • Think about these whenever you feel stress is getting the better of you.
  • Plan your next vacation, even if you have a bit of time before you can take it.
  • Just the act of doing research for it can put you in a better mood.
  • Find an organization to volunteer for.
  • Try to do it at least once a week or if you can’t swing that, do it twice a month.

The number one remedy of stress is having fun! Laughter is the best medicine, it can do miracles, ranging from reducing blood pressure, mediating pain responses, and helping to manage the negative effects of the stress hormone, cortisol.

Stressed individuals rarely take time out to smile and have fun, which only feeds the flames of a downward spiral. Make time for good memories, have fun with family and don’t take yourself too seriously.
